Yulika Satria Daya might hardly imagine that the decision he made in 2000 would change his life forever. He began his advance study at the Poly-technique of Bandung Technological Institute (ITB), majoring Electro Technique. The young man whose nick name is Daya was born in Teluk Betung, June 5th 1979 of Lampung province, well known as a smart and intelligent figure since his early age. He had his first interest in journalism since the first year of his study at ITB in 1998, fortunately, as the same time when his country was facing a radical changing.
In 1997, the monetary issue had swallowed Indonesia into a great depression and faced the government of this country to a force of reformation where a wider democracy demanded. The capitol, Jakarta, swept into massive demonstrations and anarchism everywhere. The fall of the first person who had ruled this country for the last thirty years a long has given a chance to its press’ media onto a wider independency. Televisions, newspapers, radios, all reported the same news’, demonstrations and the wave of anarchism that would still happen for the years ahead. And one day the young Yulika Satria Daya was so impressed to a TV reporter who was reporting a live news on television of May tragedy in 1998, he began to imagine that the reporter was him self.
This freshman finally required two years to assure him self that journalism is the way of life he always desires. After studied for about four semesters at ITB, Daya decided to pursue his passion and settled his study to Padjajaran University which is also in Bandung, majoring Journalism at the Faculty of Communication. He started once more as a freshman in 2000 and proudly graduated with suma cumalaude in 2004.
Nevertheless, a great decision also leads to a great impact. Surely follow to his heart call to journalism has given him such a massive change on his life, something which probably would not happen if he decided to hold on his status as the student of Electro Technique Department. This reporter who was born as the first child of four siblings whom all boys began his broadcasting professional career at a local TV station in Jakarta, DaAi TV on May 2006 as the reporter for ASEAN highlights, DaAi World News, DaAi Mata Hati
and Volunteer’s World. During the time he also followed to journalism training for natural disaster which held by ICRC and PMI. It has given him such a great advantage for his duty as a specialist of natural disaster reporter. He had reported several natural disasters such as; Yogyakarta’s and Mandailing Natal’s earth quakes, Pangandaran’s Tsunami, Langkat’s and Tamiang Aceh’s flood. Next, he was given a chance to have a full grant to enter a journalism training “Making TV News” held by Reuters Foundation in London, United Kingdom.
Since he joined into one of national television in Indonesia, tvOne Current Affairs Division in 2008, a travelling program in this station where he becomes the host reporter, “Backpacker”, has entered Yulika Satria Daya into the highest popularity he could ever imagine among his fanatic fans in Indonesia. This charming and lovely reporter is very popular with his slogan “ASIKIN AJA!” as no other reporters say it but him. Backpacker is tvOne’s best program that serves information
of tourism places around the world with the cheapest budgets as most backpackers often do. More than that, this program also serves about the historical background, local culture, society, and other related information of every single places which visited to its viewers rather than just having fun with travelling. Backpacker is a program that combining the aspect of entertainment with the knowledge of history, sociology, and anthropology. Backpacker is such an educative entertainment program.
Due to his success with Backpacker, one more program relates to religious theme he has worked on for the Ramadan’s special program. It has started to launch on June 2009 which is not far different with Backpacker exceptionally on its Islamic point of view. This program brings the viewers to find out more about the history of Islam and its spread from the countries abroad. Jejak Islam has famed his name wider for the religious character and personality he always
shows have attracted some more of his huge viewers to be his fans whom mostly of them are women.
Yulika, as many of his fans use to call him or Daya, as he always mentions his name, being loved and adored by his fans not merely on his physical appearance. He is the symbol of tvOne’s Backpacker program; some of his fans even say that he is “The Mascot”. His tremendous popularity maybe comes from his natural of a down to earth, low profile, simple, intelligent, educated, and religious manners which distinguish him from any other host reporters alike. Daya’s maturity and natural sense of humour that often showed when he hosts his program are other distinctions from him. Those are some significant characteristics that whether a reporter or a host show must have in order not only either loved or adored but also honoured by the public viewers. Daya seemed has reached his own success based on the above characteristics that belong to him and makes him as one of the most influential TV reporter today. And his achievement might similar him to one of his favourite comic character, Tintin, who is also a journalist and travelling around the world.
Furthermore, recently Yulika Satria Daya has become such a great inspiration to mostly of his young and adult fans in Indonesia, due to his life story and journey. It is proved that his influence has beyond the success of Backpacker itself. Today, the great chance and experiences to around the world that have come to him for the faith he had to his dream ten years ago have also growth the same courage and inspiration among his admirers’ hearts to chase their own dreams. For Daya is a figure who loves challenge, he considers that impossible is nothing, this is which regarded the most by his fans.
In everyday living, he always believes that relation ship does not lay on the quantity but quality. That is why the intimacy between him and the people around him is the most important aspect in his life. He has a huge concern to the social issues around him which had also encouraged him to be a journalist. He regards literature and delights poem, music, movie, travelling, and football. Indeed, Organisation and discussion are sorts of his hobbies too.
Chairil Anwar, Harry Roesly, and Remy Silado are some of his attached writers who influence him a lot. While Tin-tin by a Belgium author, Herge, and a French novelist René Goscinny 's Asterix are his favourite fictions. He also fills his comical side by reading Doraemon by Fujiko F. Fujio.
